350: The Call to Climate Action

Tuesday Oct 20 2009

    By Rick Fullerton | Bio
In church this weekend, I made a public announcement about the International Day of Climate Action on October 24, a global initiative to develop grassroots support for substantial agreement when world leaders meet in Copenhagen this December. At stake is nothing less than the future of life on planet earth. As of this morning, there were more than 3,500 events planned in a total of 161 countries. For more information or to join a group or announce your event, check out the official Day of Climate Action website.[Read More]

Global Warming & Our Commitment to the Future

Monday Oct 12 2009

   By Rick Fullerton | Bio

Recently, I have been focusing more and more of my attention on global warming and, in turn, on understanding my own reactions and responses to what’s happening. The results so far have been both fascinating and challenging. One aspect of the global warming conversation involves the role of the media in reporting scientific evidence and projections regarding the effects of carbon dioxide in heating the planet. In particular, I have learned about

The world is operating on a huge misconception that excessive garbage, extensive use of fossil fuels and other forms of pollution are causing global warming. I have discovered the true cause of global warming:

Poznan: A Change of Climate

Friday Dec 05 2008

A year ago, we were focused on Bali as 184 nations gathered to discuss the Kyoto Protocol. From December 1st to 12th this year, we are now looking to the gathering of over 10,000 delegates and staff from 190 countries in Poznan, Poland at the 14th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP 14). This event, held in conjunction with the 4th Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 4), continues the international conversation about climate change. This conversation began over a decade ago with the signing of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), an international treaty focused on considering what can be done to reduce global warming and the inevitable consequences of increasing temperatures.

The financial crisis will definitely impact the discussion at Poznan regarding whether 'green' projects will help or hinder the short-term economic health of countries. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, spoke of the financial crisis as the main threat to the climate protection agenda, in that investors will miss the "opportunity for green growth" and focus on building  cheaper and dirtier power sources instead.[Read More]

My Father in His House of Logs

Monday Jan 21 2008

I was in a conversation the other day with some friends. It wasn’t long before we were bemoaning the ‘state of the world’. We moved from politics in Washington DC to global warming and the Middle East, then took on the environment, the media and the latest arrest of suspected terrorists in Spain. In a few minutes, we were feeling a bit of despair at the seemingly endless list of intractable problems, most of which are threatening our quality of life—if not the future of our entire species. Even though I am almost a professional optimist, I still sometimes feel the ‘pull’ toward resignation, an almost irresistible urge to just throw in the towel.[Read More]

Too Late for Later

Friday Dec 28 2007

Thomas Friedman’s great op-ed piece about global warming definitively declares that, when faced with making decisions that have life or death consequences, there is, at some point, no more time for procrastinating, debating and analyzing. At some moment, to continue to procrastinate or put off until tomorrow becomes a fatal decision. I love this idea that ‘later’ ceases to be an option when the stakes are high enough. When this is the case, we are committed—no matter what we choose. It is an ‘all-or-nothing’ kind of situation.[Read More]
