Souls II

Tuesday Feb 19 2008

We had another meeting of the Old Souls group—my buddies from over the years who get together every few months to share our lives and experience as we grow older. We’ve been at it since 2001 and it is a special opportunity not only to be with friends, but also to have the kind of reflective space that empowers each of us in our own lives. The wife of one of our members marvels at how rare it is to find a group of men who are willing to be so open, vulnerable and supportive. I have belonged to other men’s groups.[Read More]

Intergenerational Friendships

Tuesday Dec 18 2007

Tom, the youngest member, is following another path and has lost any real connection with us. And a few new men have joined us in the last few meetings. These ‘Old Souls’ are my friends and, more importantly, they are teaching me friendship.[Read More]

Why We Need Mature Friends

Wednesday May 16 2007

This story was submitted by Cindy La Ferle over at Cindy's Home Office.

Until I met Sylva B., I rarely socialized with 'older people' outside my family circle. When I wasn’t working, I hung out with friends my own age. At least 40 years my senior, Sylva was the silver-haired personnel manager who interviewed me for my first job in reference book publishing in Detroit. I was 25 then, and desperate to get my career off the ground. Applying for an entry level position, I was required to pass a typing test and a two-hour literature exam. I was so nervous during the session that my fingers froze at the keys and I flunked the typing test on the first try.[Read More]
