Learning from the Internet Generation

Thursday Jun 26 2008

   By Jim Selman | Bio
My daughter wrote a blog yesterday (A World of Performance) about how technology can move us further and further away from human-to-human connections. I thought “Wow, I would never have thought about that at her age”.  Her reflections about what is happening to us as human beings were insightful, but also very useful to me. I have been promoting use of technology to connect people and never imagined that it could also divide us. Now I can be more rigorous and prudent in balancing the risks and rewards.[Read More]

A World of Performance

This past weekend, I was hiking with a couple of co-workers of mine in the beautiful Grand Canyon National Park. As we were walking, one woman posed the question, "Is our society changing or is it our awareness making it look worse?" I didn't understand what she meant at first, but as we continued to talk, she was speaking to the concept of perception. For example, people have been making 'at home 'drugs for a quite a long time, but now that it is known that they are making them, does it make society worse or just seem worse because we can now see it?[Read More]

Fatherly Love

Monday Dec 24 2007

Like everyone, I get a lot of ‘pass along’ email. Some of it is junk, but most of it is well intended ‘sharing’ from friends and family. Given the diversity amongst my friends and families, it sometimes looks like a town hall meeting with my conservative family squared off against my liberal friends. I love them both. Some of the stuff is beautiful (like wilderness photos), some of it is funny, and some of it is inspirational. I have noticed since YouTube, more and more seems to be inspirational. I wonder why…? Yesterday I received for the second time an article about Dick Hoyt, the father of a young man with cerebral palsy who is trapped in a body that doesn’t work well and who will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair communicating with an air hose. This young man, however, is blessed with a father whose love may equal that of other parents of handicapped children but whose commitment is extraordinary.[Read More]

It's the '60s Again...

Wednesday Nov 14 2007

My wife and I recently visited seacoast New Hampshire to celebrate our wedding anniversary. After leaving historic Union Chapel, the scene of our wedding 26 years ago, we were in a nostalgic mood as we drove into the center of Portsmouth. As we left the car to stroll through the town center, we heard quite a ruckus. To my surprise, the cause of all the commotion was a crowd of white-haired people holding signs in the town square and loudly shouting slogans in protest of the Iraq war. I was immediately transported to those days in the late ‘60s when I was marching with my classmates in protest of the Vietnam War. We closed down Michigan State University in the spring of 1970 and spent our time in tents on the campus lawn engaged in intense discussions about politics and war.[Read More]

Being a Grandparent

Wednesday Jan 10 2007

When I was a little kid, my picture of "grandpop" was of a little old guy with spectacles, stooped posture, a little paunch, a distinctive limp and false teeth. My grandfather often brought a smile and a wink with him, but he wasn't particularly able to relate to me. I recall we sometimes played checkers or cards; however, I don't remember doing anything special with him. We never went off exploring together (except for an occasional movie). He seemed more interested in assigning me chores (and imposing discipline) than teaching me values and how to think. Grandpa was a part of my life, but he was actually more of a babysitter than anything else.[Read More]

Connections

I’ve always been aware of the distances between people…ever since my first childhood remembrance of being a being separate from my mother. Vivid memories of being the last one chosen to be on the team in gym class translated into a story about being the one assigned to sit on the sidelines of life while others got to play. I thought I had left that all behind when I got married at the ripe old age of 28. I was ready to dive in and live full out. And I thought I did….Until recently.
