13 Grandmothers

Tuesday Feb 03 2009

Age and circumstances do not limit what is possible as we grow older. Consider the International Council of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers. In 2004, these thirteen older women gathered in upstate New York to create a global alliance. This is their commitment:

We come together to nurture, educate and train our children. We come together to uphold the practice of our ceremonies and affirm the right to use our plant medicines free of legal restriction. We come together to protect the lands where our peoples live and upon which our cultures depend, to safeguard the collective heritage of traditional medicines, and to defend the earth Herself.

Each grandmother comes from a different culture and brings their unique women's wisdom to the group. Read their stories. They have published a book, do media interviews, are completing a documentary film, and travel the globe hosting workshops and speaking out.
