Wednesday Apr 07 2010 The World Health Organization (WHO)'s campaign this year is called "1000 cities, 1000 lives". The goals are to open up public spaces to healthy activities (like clean-up campaigns, closing off streets to cars, town hall meetings, etc.) and to collect stories of urban health champions. The emphasis is to raise awareness of the many health challenges related to the world's increasing urbanization and to promote improvements to urban living conditions that make cities accessible and age-friendly for all residents. Search to see if your city is one of the 800 who have registered for the campaign so far on their 1000 cities website and find out what events are happening in your area. Watch the stories they have received so far about urban health champions or submit a short video of your own about a local health champion on their YouTube page. Join their cause on their Facebook page. [Read More]Tagged with: world_health world_health_organization

Thursday Dec 10 2009 Here are some helpful tips for travelling this holiday season: Review international policies. Some countries do screenings and exams at airports, and can quarantine passengers in a hospital or hotel chosen by the government for up to 7 days. Around the holidays, screening procedures (including filling out questionnaires and having your temperature taken) could cause significant delays. At the moment, neither the U.S. nor Canada[Read More]
Monday Nov 23 2009 When we know that there is an end to a particularly strenuous period of work, we can feel energized and become even more productive. When we think that the flow of work is endless or that we have no choice in the matter, then we may begin to break down, feel disempowered, become tired. Life begins to feel like a burden. I have found that resolving these kinds of chronic negative moods about workload and feeling overwhelmed begins by[Read More]
Friday Nov 20 2009 I think the most common complaints I hear from folks in corporations these days is that they are ‘just tired’, have ‘low energy’ or are ‘burned out’. Usually these declarations are accompanied by a compelling story that there is ‘too much work’ or that they are pressed to produce without having the resources they need. It seems people are working in a condition in which they are being constantly called on to produce more for less. The results: poor morale (at best), an environment of stress (at worst), breakdowns in people’s health, lower productivity, and even (in extreme cases) sabotage. But what do these statements mean? And what can we do to change our experience at work (or in life) for that matter?[Read More]
Wednesday Nov 11 2009 New perspectives on what might be possible in terms of local, homegrown food production. This 10-minute video takes a provocative, unconventional look at the implications of genetic modification, land use, and organic produce to come up with designs for diagnostic kitchens, food creation, and home farming. |
