Embracing What Is

Thursday Jul 10 2008

By Eliezer Sobel | Website

There is much talk on Serene Ambition and elsewhere about altering one’s perspective and internal conversation about aging so as to “create a future to live into” that infuses the present with passion and energy, as distinct from the dreary resignation of merely playing out the repetitive and predictable habits and tendencies generated by the past. And yet, while this sounds good in theory, what of the physical limitations imposed by age?

Fear 101

Wednesday Mar 14 2007

By Kay Costley-White

A lot is written these days about aging gracefully. As we approach our senior years, we also become aware of a vague dread: we don’t want to acknowledge our fear of dying.

Evolution, while fitting us with an urgent will to survive and multiply, also equipped us with a powerful, instinctive fear of death. It is perfectly normal and natural to have a strong aversion to anything to do with it. Many people end their lives without ever addressing the issue. But if we choose to open up to this part of our genetic makeup, what is it really about? Does it relate to the course of illness leading to the body’s demise, to the process of dying itself, or to fear of what comes after? Joy

Wednesday Oct 25 2006

I was watching Oprah recently, a program featuring a few of our famous stars speaking on aging. They were talking about this whole idea of what your real age is. One was only 50, so just a baby to me, the other was 65 and didn’t look more than 55, but the one that caught my eye was Diahann Carol at 71 years old. Yikes, she looked fabulous!!!! I have always been one to mention my age, as I have always enjoyed getting older. I intentionally want to give people younger than I am something to look forward to. So I share my journey with them, whenever it’s appropriate.

Happiness

Thursday Oct 19 2006

By Dr. Anne Marie Evers

I was having lunch with my friend Lori and her sister Carol, whom I had not met before, last week. We’re all about the same age, and our conversation started out very pleasantly. Then after a while, Carol started expounding in a monotone voice about how terrible it was to be getting older and how she absolutely hated the aging process. She talked for 45 minutes in great detail about her aches and pains, her failing eyesight and hearing, and her husband’s lack of interest in her sexually. She concluded that she probably could not attract men any more.I finally got to ask her if she was happy. She replied, “Happy, how could you ask such a question? I used to be the prettiest girl in my class and now look at me. I’m 68, a disaster and over the hill.” I realized that, even though we’re the same age, my perspective on aging at least allows me to be happy. I think that’s because I believe getting older is about getting better.
